Abstract

In the article, the researcher examined the role of visual sources in teaching the history of Russia of the 19th — 20th centuries. The author investigated the specifics of modern approaches in studying Russian history and the classification of visual materials as a kind of auxiliary History discipline. The researcher studied the history of Russia as the history of visualizing its milestones in iconic photographs by leading artists of the 19th — 20th centuries. On the one hand, the development of photography has determined the visualization of the documentary and protocol recording of the main moments of Russian history; on the other hand, it has shaped the image of key, typical, and iconic figures and crucial frames-events that have become archetypes of national self-identification for several generations. The author explored the role and significance of photography as an art form (compared to painting) in historical research and the impact of Russian history on the formation of the public position of its authors, the artists-photographers.
