Abstract

In the article, the researcher studied the role of avant-garde art traditions in Ukrainian painting in the 1950s – 1980s. Time proves that the image of the mentality of the people at the turning history points is not only an accurate indicator of the immediate state of the society that produced it, but also a sign of its genetic memory and creative potential for the future. These turning points contributed not only to the development of Ukrainian fine art, pushing it to search for new figurative and plastic solutions, but also to the sharpening of research interest in art history to innovative avant-garde trends. The author analyzed the theoretical concepts and works of Yury Lutskevich, Tiberey Silvashi, Yury Egorov, Valentin Khrushch, Lyudmila Yastreb, Oleg Nedoshitko, and others. The researcher concluded that Ukrainian painting in the 1950s – 1980s revived the traditions of baroque, Byzantinism, early 20th-century avant-garde, and post-war modernism, as well as created contemporary interpretation of biblical motifs. The author summarized that the combination of tradition and modernity within the framework of painting has a stable trend. Artists seek to reflect on the past in order to comprehend the historical essence of the present.
